This flooring is 3/4" thick. Most hardwood floors come prefinished. We also can install an unfinished wood and site finish to your specifications. Solid hardwood floors can be refinished multiple times. The width of solid hardwood planks ranges from 2" wide to 7" wide. Narrow widths are the least expensive option. Solid hardwood floors are known for their timeless look. The Janka Scale measures hardness: cherry is a softer wood; maple, hickory and oak are harder. Harder woods are less prone to scratches and dents.
Solid hardwood floors need time to acclimate to your home's climate. Humidity for solid hardwood floors is its major drawback which is why it is not recommended to install natural solid hardwood below grade, such as in basements, or over a crawl space.
Engineered hardwood floors offer some of the same features as solid hardwood floors. An engineered hardwood floor ranges from 3/8" - 3/4" in thickness. This floor is available prefinished or unfinished. An engineered hardwood floor is made of 3-12 layers of wood bonded together. It consists of a top veneer layer which is the layer that we see. This layer is thickest – 1 -4 mm. There is a middle layer also known as the core which typically consists of glued together high density fiberboard or plywood. This layer is 1/4” – 1/2” thick. Finally, there is the bottom layer which is used as a backing, this layer is anywhere from 1/16" - 1/4" in thickness. Engineered hardwood floors are a great option because you can also install them in areas that you would not install solid hardwood because it is less likely to expand or contract when exposed to changes in temperature and humidity. In addition, you also have the luxury of finding more exotic species and extra wide planks. Engineered hardwood flooring widths range from 3” to 7 1/2”. Once installed, it is hard to tell the difference between a solid hardwood floor and an engineered hardwood floor.
In addition to selling and installing solid & engineered hardwood flooring, we also specialize in site refinishing of existing hardwood floors. You will be amazed at the transformation. This process involves sanding off the old finish, then applying stain and topping with several coats of either oil based or water based polyurethane. Water based polyurethane dries quicker and there is less odor. In addition to refinishing wood floors, we can also refinish stair treads and risers.
